Call for Africa Astronomy Month: August 2024

Dear Fellow Astronomy Enthusiasts,

We are thrilled to announce the celebration of Africa Astronomy Month this coming August 2024! This special month is dedicated to the wonders of the night sky and the incredible contributions Africa is making to the field of astronomy. We invite everyone across the world to join us in organizing and participating in a diverse range of events that will inspire, educate, and connect people with the cosmos.

Africa Astronomy Month offers individuals, schools, universities, businesses, clubs, and organisations from multidisciplinary fields a chance to unite in celebrating the wonders of astronomy. This event welcomes both seasoned astronomers and curious beginners, as well as anyone who has ever been inspired by the night sky, providing numerous ways to engage with the cosmos. We also encourage event submissions that combine multiple disciplines, such as the arts, humanities, and all sciences.

This month-long event also celebrates a very special occasion: the 32nd General Assembly of  the International Astronomical Union (IAU-GA 2024), which will be taking place for the first time on African soil in Cape Town, South Africa from 6 – 15 August 2024. We especially encourage you to hold events during these two weeks to make the most of the over 2500 astronomers who will be visiting Cape Town from around the world.

During Africa Astronomy Month, you are welcome to host any sort of astronomy themed event. Communities can host stargazing sessions, setting up telescopes in local parks or schoolyards to explore the night sky. Public lectures and workshops can be organized to share the latest discoveries and practical astronomy tips. Astronomy-inspired art or dance classes can be used to inspire in unexpected ways. Full-day or weekend festivals with planetarium shows, science exhibitions, and interactive activities will cater to all ages. Virtual events such as online drawing classes, webinars and observatory tours ensure everyone can participate. Schools are encouraged to hold astronomy-themed activities, fostering a love for the universe among students.
