Inspire the Future of Astronomy and STEM in South Africa!
We are seeking individuals based in South Africa who are fascinated by the wonders of astronomy and STEM to volunteer for an inspiring initiative rooted in the legacy of the 2024 International Astronomical Union General Assembly (IAU-GA)—the first ever held in Africa.
As part of this initiative, volunteers will lead astronomy outreach efforts in communities across South Africa, serving as relatable role models and inspiring the next generation of scientists. Whenever possible, we will strive to assign ambassadors to a school or science centre near their home region.
What is the Legacy Ambassador Initiative?
This initiative builds on the successful outreach activities of the IAU-GA, where international delegates engaged with schools in the Western Cape, sparking curiosity through interactive talks and hands-on science demonstrations. Now, we are extending this impact nationwide! Aligning with the Cascade Outreach Model, this Initiative is dedicated to fostering diversity, inclusivity, and equipping young scientists with essential communication and leadership skills.
As part of this legacy, we are planning the mammoth task of distributing 100 TV systems to selected schools across South Africa. Each system includes a 40-inch TV screen, a Raspberry Pi computer, a keyboard, a mouse, and a webcam (which were originally used during the IAU-GA hybrid poster sessions). These tools are designed to empower schools with limited resources, providing the learners with opportunities to explore innovative ways of learning and engaging with astronomy and STEM fields.
As a Legacy Ambassador, you will:
- Lead astronomy and STEM outreach efforts in communities across South Africa
- Serve as a relatable role model, inspiring the next generation of scientists
- Support the distribution of 100 TV systems to selected schools and science centres, empowering learners with digital learning tools
- Assist in delivering and installing TV systems, engaging students with hands-on activities, and facilitating discussions on astronomy and STEM
