African Planetarium Association Biannual Workshop
in conjunction with the
5th Annual Conference of the African Astronomical Society
22 – 23 March 2025, Johannesburg, South Africa
This is a call for registration and the submission of abstracts for the next African Planetarium Association (APA) Biannual Workshop, to be held in conjunction with the General Assembly & 5th Annual Conference of the African Astronomical Society (AfAS-2025). This hybrid workshop is scheduled to take place from 22 – 23 March 2025, at the University of South Africa (UNISA) Florida Campus in Johannesburg, South Africa, directly preceding AfAS-2025 (24 – 28 March). The workshop is being jointly organised by APA, AfAS, and UNISA and will be free to attend for all who register.
The APA Biannual Workshop will focus on the current state of planetaria in Africa and will explore how APA and the broader African planetarium community can collaborate effectively to tackle shared challenges. Through interactive sessions, participants will share success stories from our African colleagues, exchange lessons learned, and discuss best practices for building and operating planetaria. The workshop will also include the election of a new APA committee and discussions on how APA can better support the community in the future.
The 2-day Workshop program will include:
- Presentations by African planetarians on their unique experiences
- Powerful stories about the use of planetaria in education and for inspiring young people in astronomy and science.
- Practical workshops addressing planetarium challenges
- Panel Discussions and Q&A sessions
- The election of the new APA committee
Please ensure that all submitted abstracts (for your presentation, workshop, or special session) align with the above focus. There will also be an opportunity for you to exhibit your work, business, or research related to planetaria; please contact Sally Macfarlane (at sally.macfarlane@afasociety.org) if you wish to exhibit. If you have a mobile planetarium you would be willing to set up and run for the duration of the workshop and AfAS-2025, please also get in contact.
