The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), in collaboration with the Centre for Radio Astronomy Techniques and Technologies (RATT) at Rhodes University and Cavendish Laboratory and Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the University of Cambridge/REACH project, is excited to announce that the 2021 African Radio Interferometry Winter School will be held from Monday 28 June to Friday 2 July 2021.
ARIWS 2021 will be an online workshop that will be presented free of charge.
Presentations will focus on the introduction of radio astronomy science, along with data processing skills. The intended audiences are:
- postgraduate students,
- post-docs, and
- young scientists/professionals
who want to acquire a good working knowledge of interferometry data processing techniques, with an emphasis toward radio astronomy with the MeerKAT telescope, as well as MeerKAT data processing and analysis.
The workshop will provide a week of lectures about interferometric radio techniques and practical tutorials on data reduction. There will also be opportunities to interact with presenters during discussion and Q&A sessions.
The aim of the African Radio Interferometry Winter School is to give students an introduction to radio astronomy, specifically as it relates to MeerKAT. Thus, ARIWS will also support a limited number (10, ten) workshop students to attend the Galactic Fidelity (GalFid) workshop (PI: Prof Gyula I. G. Józsa) to take place during January 2022 in South Africa.Students will benefit from the insight gained from hands-on processing of the big MeerKAT data set, as well as being introduced to the usage of the current Radio Astronomy Research Group (RARG) pipeline software for radio astronomy processing.
